User:Robertecoles
I stumbled upon Robertecoles this account while checking on an image recently added to the main infobox of Robert Coles (psychiatrist), but I'm wondering whether it might be one considered to be added to this page or whether the account should be marked with {{Deceased Wikipedian}}. Of course, I've got no information as to whether the two people are the same person; I'm just mainly asking out of curiosity. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:48, 8 June 2026 (UTC)
- Robertecoles joined Wikipedia and made 2 edits to Robert Coles (psychiatrist) in the next 2 minutes, to change the birth year. It could be the same person, but we won't know. Jay 💬 11:20, 8 June 2026 (UTC)
- I don't know if we have a minimum amount of edits in order to be mentioned in our article, but two edits seems rather too little. Lova Falk (talk) 12:47, 8 June 2026 (UTC)
- A few hundred is usually considered the minimum, but IMO the more important factor is whether an existing editor personally remembers that editor and wants to write something about them. WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:46, 8 June 2026 (UTC)

User:Ramdrake
Would anyone be able to verify if this is User:Ramdrake ? The name and location are matches, and the date of death is around a month after their last edit. However, not sure if there is anything conclusive enough to confirm it. EaglesFan37 (talk) 16:46, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, I am wondering if you've tried emailing this user in case a family relative may respond to confirm this is a true death? Around 8 months ago, an editor was able to email a different user to check if another editor had passed then a family member did confirm by email the passing was indeed true.
- Ramdrake has been suffering from health issues and the name appears on the userpage so I think it seems a near certainty. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 19:17, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Iggy the Swan I haven't emailed this user. The potential date of death would have occurred 13 years ago, so I doubt their Wikipedia email is still being monitored by anyone. EaglesFan37 (talk) 19:51, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Iggy the Swan Just wanted to follow up about this. I feel a bit uncomfortable sending that email, and I haven't been able to find anything definitive. EaglesFan37 (talk) 17:52, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
- Based on the 13 year gap, I find it unlikely someone else would have had authorised access to the email attached. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 19:58, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Iggy the Swan I went through their talk page to see if there were any current Wikipedians that had interacted with Ramdrake on wiki. Going to tag them here (in case of the very unlikely scenario that they are aware of anything). @Fences and windows @EdJohnston EaglesFan37 (talk) 21:05, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
- I didn't know Ramdrake personally so I can't help. Fences&Windows 21:11, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Fences and windows Would you happen to be aware of anyone who does? EaglesFan37 (talk) 00:34, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
- My only interaction with Ramdrake was in handling a 3RR case. I did not know him personally, and can't add any helpful information here. EdJohnston (talk) 03:23, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- No worries, I knew it was a long shot. Going through their talk page archives, maybe @Wobble or @Tallard could know something? They both have edited in 2026 and seemed to have been on their talk pages a lot in the past. EaglesFan37 (talk) 03:33, 22 July 2026 (UTC)

User:Warshy
I have received credible evidence (ticket:2026062910000298) of the death of this user on 8 January 2024, though I will note that the links that were sent did little more than verify identity so I'm going to omit it mainly for the privacy of the extended family. Posting here in case anyone wants to write a blurb for the archives. Primefac (talk) 05:43, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
Gobonobo
Hello, I'm one of the co-founders of Wikimedians of Minnesota. User:Gobonobo helped found and run this group with me and @Myotus, and he's a longtime Wikimedia community member. Myotus and I received word of mouth news that he was killed in April of this year, corroborated by all of his social media and Wikimedia contributions going silent. We have been unable to contact his family or anyone closer to him. I added him to the Wikimania memorial page and would like to add him here (as suggested by Rhododendrites), however we have basically no information on family wishes or even an obituary. If there are any users who worked closer with him on Wikipedia, they should feel free to memorialize him however they feel is appropriate. Myotus and I are still trying to reach out and get connected with his family but we don't know if that will be successful, and it will probably take a lot of time. Pingnova (talk) 21:54, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Pingnova, please accept my condolences for your loss. This page doesn't require any information about family wishes or such information. No link to an obituary or other website is required, especially if it would amount to a posthumous WP:OUTING. Some version of what you've written above would be perfectly acceptable. There is some general advice at Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians/Guidelines. WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:20, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- I think I may have interacted with him once or twice, but not very much. Anyhow I've left a short message on his talk page expressing condolences. In solidarity, Gommeh (talk 🎮 sign) 14:33, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- Such a hard thing figuring out how to handle posthumous outing. I have found an obituary that verifies this. I don't know if Gobonobo ever released their name/identity on-wiki, so won't link it here. I can entirely imagine being reluctant to reveal personal information on-wiki while alive but wanting my own obituary to be shared, but it's hard to decide what's right in this case. I'm content to share a link to the obit off-wiki with the Minnesota folks if they haven't come across it yet, and defer to your judgment as the ones who knew Gobonobo best. Regardless, this is verified and at minimum a profile of their long history of on-wiki contributions can be compiled. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 18:59, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
- I've added him to the 2026 list and started a section for him at Wikipedia:Deceased_Wikipedians/2026#Gobonobo. His obituary does mention his Wikipedia activities. Some1 (talk) 19:22, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
User:AussieLegend
Based on the message on their userpage and the time that has since passed, it is very likely that they have since passed. There is a committed identity on their userpage, so there likely is a way for an admin to verify if AussieLegend is now deceased, if anyone desires to do as such. EaglesFan37 (talk) 17:21, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- I am wondering if @Pppery: might know about whether AussieLegend has indeed passed between 30 March and 2 May 2022. Committed identities should be useful especially in the context of deceased status or not. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 20:10, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- I know nothing. * Pppery * in solidarity 20:51, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Pppery I don't know if you have access to their real-life identity or not, but if you do, you may be able to find an online obituary that corresponds with it (there is enough information on AussieLegend's userpage about themselves to be able verify it's the same person). EaglesFan37 (talk) 20:58, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- Again, I know nothing. All I did was read their userpage and add a not around tag given that they had been inactive for a month. Please don't involve me with this. * Pppery * in solidarity 21:22, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- How does a committed identity help in verifying deceased status? Jay 06:56, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- I don't think it does. In theory, if a surviving loved one knew how to do it and had access to the same system, they could prove that they're in control of the system. AIUI (ask at WP:VPT if you want better answers) it's more useful for cases of someone losing access to an e-mail account, and needing to prove that whatamIdoing@mail.com is the same person as the previously known whatamIdoing@post.com.
- But for our purposes, Special:EmailUser/AussieLegend is usually the place to start. WhatamIdoing (talk) 07:32, 24 July 2026 (UTC)

- I haven't yet received a reply to my off-wiki query, but checking the information I do have more closely (regarding two people with a similar name), I have absolutely no doubt now that he is deceased. Therefore see User talk:AussieLegend#RIP and Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians/2022#AussieLegend. Pinging @EaglesFan37: as the original poster of this thread. I'll ask for a global lock etc. soon. - @Graham87 There's another Australian Wikipedia, User:Iryna Harpy (43,000 edits, former EOTW), who hasn't edited since 2020. There is a health issues tag on her Wikipedia page. Would you be able to find out information regarding her as well? EaglesFan37 (talk) 17:49, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- @EaglesFan37: Nope, sorry, I've got nothing. While maintaining the lists of former administrators among other things, I too have found a few users over the years where I've wondered if they're still around (I've been particularly careful about checking since I discovered the Ronhjones situation in 2020). But I haven't posted them publicly because I think this comes dangerously close to outing. But sometimes this can bring closure, as above. Until 2007, this page used to have a possibly deceased Wikipedians section but it was removed (also see this section of the talk page archive). Now it would be an even bigger list of people. Graham87 (talk) 03:45, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Graham87 That makes sense. Thanks for giving it a shot. EaglesFan37 (talk) 04:02, 9 August 2026 (UTC)

User:LouI
I was going through the list of missing wikipedians, and his userpage lists him as deceased. EaglesFan37 (talk) 17:45, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- This user should not be listed on that list. @GPHemsley:, I assume you've added the template correctly with the obituary of a similar name included back in 2021. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 20:37, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Iggy the Swan Should I go ahead and removed them, then? I don't know if it's been 100% confirmed or not (given no global lock on the account, which doesn't seem to always be done). EaglesFan37 (talk) 20:50, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

Template:User grieving
I think it may be beneficial to put a link to that template on Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians, to allow people who are grieving the loss of a deceased Wikipedian they may have had a connection to (e.g. an IRL friend or loved one) to show it on their user page. This may be contested though, so I thought I'd bring it here for discussion first. In solidarity, Gommeh (talk 🎮 sign) 14:38, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- We could add a link to it on Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians/Guidelines.
- One of the most common questions we get on this page is about how to determine whether a person has died, so maybe we should add information about that, too. WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:07, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- There's also this userbox that people can use: User:Pdebee/UBX/RemembersAbsentFriend. Some1 (talk) 14:06, 25 July 2026 (UTC)
I completely re-wrote the guidelines today
Please read Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians/Guidelines. I re-wrote it today with common questions in mind, and also with an eye towards making it a bit more practical or cookbook-style. Most editors encountering that page are only going to see it once or twice, and they need to be able to find the relevant bits easily.
I have two questions in the spirit of Chesterton's Fence:
- We have recommended "Please leave a request at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection to ask that their User: page be fully protected, to prevent vandals from defacing the page" for a long time. However, since then, we've added filter 803, which stops unregistered and unconfirmed editors from editing other people's User: pages. Do we need full protection (which stops non-admins from fixing problems when templates are deleted or categories get renamed), or is this usually enough?
- We have recommended alerting the Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost about editors' deaths. Is that still desired by them? Should that advice be only for deaths that are relatively recent in nature, since we sometimes find out about a death 10+ years after it happened? (Pinging JPxG)
What do you all think? WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:40, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- I think that you did a great job rewriting the guidelines. Much better! I have no answer to your first question, but to answer your second question, I remember some of the editors I had a lot of contact with ten years ago, so it would be relevant for me to see a note in the Signpost. On the other hand, this page is on my watchlist for exactly that reason, so actually, I don't have an answer to your second question either... Lova Falk (talk) 13:45, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- Agreed, thank you, WhatamIdoing. Obituaries are good in the Signpost. Can't answer #1.
- Can we mention other sister projects. Does one request to Meta for protection apply to other projects? (I don't know how this works. I made several separate requests and a Meta request last. Would Meta have included the Commons like it included Wikibooks?)
- Clarify "
The template {{Deceased Wikipedian}} may be placed at the top of talk pages. This includes Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery.
" Do you mean the first template also installs the category? - I'm not sure about encouraging others to edit and reorganize the talk page. My opinion only, to allow condolences of course but maybe minimize this section.
- The section §About the account is too technical. Good to know but over my head after 20 years here.
- -SusanLesch (talk) 15:03, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- You are a doc writer's dream. I love the range of your responses. Answers:
- Meta-Wiki only handles Meta-Wiki itself and global locks. Every single separate wiki needs to be notified.
- Yes, that template includes that category automatically.
- I'm thinking that, when non-Wikipedians look into the page, they don't want to see a bunch of messages about articles being deleted, warning the editor for being rude, etc. Maybe it would be better to say something like "Consider archiving old messages".
- All right, that needs to be re-written, with more attention to the step-by-step actions.
- Check back in a little bit for the new version. WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:10, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- I made two changes in place. Keep up the good work. -SusanLesch (talk) 22:38, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks. I hadn't noticed that the same information was repeated, and I like your wording better. WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:43, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
- After my request to Meta, at least the following were protected: Wikiquote, Wikivoyage, Wiktionary, Wikibooks, MediaWiki, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Incubator, Wikimania. And some kind of global lock. I'm at a loss what to do about other editions (ar.wikipedia etc.). -SusanLesch (talk) 22:48, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
- You left a request for page protection of their User: page on Meta-Wiki. That means that nobody (except admins) will be able to edit their User page, and the admin's edit to add the "deceased" template to the Meta-Wiki page will show at most of the wikis, because they mostly don't have local user pages. (Instead, their Meta-Wiki User: page is shown at any wiki they've used but didn't create a local User: page for; see, e.g., the note at the bottom of q:User:Gobonobo.) However:
- Local User: pages, such as w:ar:User:Gobonobo, override the Meta-Wiki global user page, so there is no note there, and the page is still unprotected. (@Mervat, could you please take care of that for us, according to whatever the local customs are?)
- There is no central system for requesting that all of a deceased editor's User: pages be protected at all of the wikis. I'm not even sure how to get a complete list of User: pages across all the wikis, but if it's possible to do that, then @Quiddity probably has a link to the tool.
- The account is globally locked. That applies to every wiki automatically. That will prevent it from being hacked. WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:04, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
- re: searching - Using the Global-search tool is probably the easiest way to find locally created variants of a page-title. E.g. This (https://global-search.toolforge.org/?q=.*®ex=1&namespaces=2&title=Gobonobo) search of any-string in namespace 2 (user) with that username, shows 17 results.
- re: your docs overhaul - Thank you! Quiddity (talk) 13:42, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
- Nifty search, Quiddity. I went through the list at Special:CentralAuth manually and may have missed a couple. Overall except for simple.wikipedia, these 14 are a subset of the Global-search tool 17. From the list, I only find User pages remaining here: ar.wikipedia, de.wikipedia, en.wiktionary, es.wikipedia, fr.wikipedia, mk.wikipedia, nv.wikipedia, pl.wikipedia, pt.wikipedia, ru.wikipedia, sh.wikipedia, simple.wikipedia, sr.wikipedia, wikidata. Because I made a separate request first to Wikidata before Meta, protection is already there. -SusanLesch (talk) 15:13, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
- WhatamIdoing, so I must ask each of those editions (de, es, fr, etc.) to protect his User page? I've never met a soul who knows all these languages.
- I'm unfamilar with the general term "wiki" and not sure what it refers to. I'm calling Meta and all its associates "project" following Meta's terms (not WikiProject, capital P). I'm calling the other language Wikipedias "language edition" or "edition" following the List of Wikipedias. I don't know if there are any other categories of Wikimedia sites.
- Re:
The account is globally locked. That applies to every wiki automatically.
What initiates a global lock? Why does it appear so prominently in wiktionary? -SusanLesch (talk) 17:35, 29 July 2026 (UTC)- You don't need to post in other languages. You have the option of making requests on their village pumps (or directly to an admin). I think most people just ignore the other wikis, especially if the editor only made a few edits there. If you choose to make a request at some of them, you can post in English. Apologizing for not speaking every language in the world is optional. Anyone who would yell at someone for not speaking the local language, when they're reporting an actual death, is a horrible human.
- A wiki is any website that is edited collaborative/in ways similar to the English Wikipedia. Both "projects" (e.g., all the Wiktionaries) and each individual "language editions" (e.g., the Polish Wikipedia) are correctly referred to as "wikis". "The wikis" is a common way to indicate "all the Wikipedias and all the sister projects, plus anything else I've forgotten". (Then people don't have to talk about whether ____ is 'really' a sister project, especially if they believe that being considered a 'sister project' means being less important.)
- A global lock (sometimes called a "GLOCK") is done by a Steward. There are various ways to configure wikis, e.g., to add an extra note at the top or bottom of a page. The English (but not other) Wiktionary probably asked for the block logs to be shown.

- Thank you, you've given some masterful new links in the guidelines.
Special:ListAdminsshould work everywhere. (The first link after [before] a name must be that admin's Talk no matter the writing system.) Also amazing is this list of Village Pumps. - Because the two different classes of sites are handled differently, for the guidelines my vote was to use the right nomenclature in place of "wiki". However your topic sentence in §Notifying other wikis is beautiful. Don't change this.
- I asked for protection at Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat. Don't think I encountered a "steward" (the guidelines refer to stewards several times).
- Is it possible to clarify this:
The note can, if the family wishes, also provide simple directions to a friend/family member who wishes to access the user page.
(if the family wishes, provide directions to the family?). I think you mean the second flag here. - For Wiktionary, I wondered why we say
Gobonobo is currently blocked.
Thank you for the expanded guidelines. Well done. -SusanLesch (talk) 17:29, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- MediaWiki accepts English for everything, including all Special: pages. So, for example, at the French Wikipedia, if they want an image on the left, they type
|gauche|vignette, and at the German-language Wikipedia, they type|mini|links, but the English|left|thumbwill work everywhere (as you can see, e.g., in the Chinese TFA today: w:zh:东弗里斯兰号战列舰#第一次世界大战). Consequently, if you know the name of a Special: page in English, you can paste it into the search bar at any wiki, and it will send you off to whatever that page is called in the local language. - BTW, if you would like non-English wikis to show the menus in English, then adding
?uselang=ento the end of a simple URL will do that for the one page, and if you'd like it to happen on all pages at all of them everywhere, then go to Special:GlobalPreferences and set the 'Internationalization' language to English. (Note that this will mostly break any in-browser auto-translation tools you have, as it will tell your browser that the page is already in English and therefore doesn't need to be translated.) - I really don't know what
The note can, if the family wishes, also provide simple directions
is meant to say. I'd intended to ask about it earlier but forgot. Is that supposed to be about telling the loved ones how to edit the User: page? Maybe we should just delete that. WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:54, 1 August 2026 (UTC)- Agree, delete that. -SusanLesch (talk) 11:09, 2 August 2026 (UTC)

- I don't believe I did anything wrong my with my last message (their obituary says "known to friends as "Dave the Red" and says they were an enthusiastic Wikipedian. If I did something wrong, I can strike if needed. EaglesFan37 (talk) 00:24, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
- I think it's okay. If someone else disagrees, they can say something. Can you get the pages tagged, etc.? WhatamIdoing (talk) 02:02, 5 August 2026 (UTC)

User:Ss112
Hello there, does anyone know if this user has passed away or simply moved away from Wikipedia? My suspicions of the former is due to the fact that they would edit extensively, having over 700,000 edits since 2006, before rapidly stopping on 11 December 2024 (Special:Contributions/Ss112). This is unusual as typically people who lose interest in Wikipedia have their editing taper off rather than coming to an abrupt halt. They have hundreds of edits in the days prior to their disappearance. They typically edited music-related articles. jolielover♥talk 08:33, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah that can be an ominous sign. Their deleted user page may or may not provide clues about their real-life identity. Graham87 (talk) 09:06, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- There are a lot of deleted revisions, but the only potentially relevant info in the revisions I looked at was their name is Sean, they are Australian living in Australia and turned 24 in April 2016. Thryduulf (talk) 09:35, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- A 34 year old who suddenly stops editing may have lost a password or become a parent. WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:45, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- The point is that it's unusual to stop so abruptly, I wouldn't be as suspicious if it tapered off, but to have hundreds of edits every single day and just... stop??? Is odd to me. Also, the account has over 700,000 and has been active since 2006, so losing a password is unlikely, and should typically prompt a frantic attempt at recovery or something. I'd at least expect an update from an alternate account. I don't know. I saw them in a lot of music-articles page history and it made me sad to see them suddenly vanish. jolielover♥talk 18:54, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- Don't love publicizing personally identifying information from revisions a user requested to be deleted ... — Rhododendrites talk \\ 19:17, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- Oh, I did not catch that, just saw the most recent deletion and assumed it was people accidentally creating talk page comments there - I agree, if this comes from a requested deletion. Shouldn't reveal such information then. I was hoping somebody knew him personally or something, or they were open about certain details of their life. jolielover♥talk 19:22, 8 August 2026 (UTC)

- Has anyone tried Special:EmailUser/Ss112 yet? WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:44, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Jolielover There are some other users that were very active until there last active day. I took a look at Wikipedia:Missing Wikipedians, there are User:AlbertSM, User:NewEnglandYankee, User:Dsimic, and User:Biker Biker as well. EaglesFan37 (talk) 18:18, 8 August 2026 (UTC)

It appears that User:Renamed user 4dc930d71c840edbdc5f01a85ce38e7d considers their deadname to be that of a deceased person, but I don't think we work that way. —Antonissimo (talk) 07:43, 25 August 2026 (UTC)
- I've removed the tag from the User: page. Someone else removed the entry from the OBIT page. This new editor wouldn't have qualified for an entry here even if we had irrefutable proof that they had actually died. WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:14, 25 August 2026 (UTC)
