Wasei-kango are words formed in Japan from Chinese-derived morphemes. In their central sense, they are written in kanji and read with the on'yomi pronunciations of the characters, and are classified within the Japanese Sino-Japanese vocabulary known as kango. The category includes words whose written form was created in Japan and, in broader treatments, Chinese forms that acquired a new structure or specialized meaning in Japanese. Its boundaries therefore vary among scholars.
