Seoul Economic Daily (Korean: 서울경제) is a South Korean business daily newspaper published in Seoul. It was founded on 1 August 1960 as a sister paper of the Hankook Ilbo by the publisher Chang Key-young, with the stated aim of supporting economic self-reliance and serving as a practical guide to household economics.[1] Forced to cease publication in November 1980 under the Chun Doo-hwan government's media-consolidation policy, it resumed publication on 1 August 1988 and became independent of the Hankook Ilbo on 1 October 2000.[1]
The paper is one of South Korea's major economic dailies, alongside the Maeil Business Newspaper and The Korea Economic Daily, and also publishes an English-language edition. It is published by Seoul Economic Daily Co., Ltd., chaired by Chang Jae-min, with Son Dong-young as president and publisher.[2] As of 2020 its ABC-certified paid circulation was about 62,000 copies.[3]
History
Origins and founding (1960–1970)
The paper traces its origins to the Seoul Economic Research Association, a study group organised in 1947 by Chang Key-young, then a research official at the Bank of Korea and later the owner of the Hankook Ilbo.[4] Seoul Economic Daily was launched on 1 August 1960 as a sister paper of the Hankook Ilbo, under publisher Chang Key-young and its founding editor-in-chief, Kim Hyeon-je. It professed to be a comprehensive economic title, analysing economic affairs while also carrying science, entertainment, hobby and sports coverage.[1] The newspaper describes itself as South Korea's first economic newspaper.[5] An earlier specialist title, the Sanop Kyongje Sinmun, had relaunched as an economic daily in 1954, six years before Seoul Economic Daily was founded, and was one of four daily economic newspapers published in the country at the time.[6]
On 27 February 1968 a fire destroyed the newspaper's head office building and killed seven members of staff. Production was not interrupted, and a replacement office building was subsequently completed.[7]
From 1 December 1961 the fourth page, which had carried culture and science coverage, was given over entirely to sport; the sports section ended on 26 September 1969, when the sister paper Ilgan Sports was launched.[1]
Forced closure and compensation claim (1980–1997)
The paper was forced to cease publication in November 1980 under the media-consolidation policy of the Chun Doo-hwan government, its final issue appearing on 25 November 1980.[8][1]
The publisher later sought compensation from the state. In a constitutional case brought by the Hankook Ilbo company, the Constitutional Court of Korea summarised the company's account of the closure: that under the new military leadership's press-consolidation plan, Chang Kang-jae of the owning family was taken to an army security unit on 12 November 1980 and made to sign a document renouncing the Seoul Economic Daily amid intimidation by armed soldiers, after which the paper was closed with effect from 25 November 1980.[9] The company sued the state for damages in August 1991, claiming 98.3 billion won, and during the proceedings challenged the constitutionality of the limitation provision of the State Compensation Act. The challenge was rejected by the Seoul District Court in April 1996, and on 20 February 1997 the Constitutional Court held that the provision was not unconstitutional.[9]
Reinstatement and independence (1988–2000)
Seoul Economic Daily resumed publication on 1 August 1988, under issue number 6,391, roughly seven years and nine months after its forced closure; the relaunch print run was reported at approximately 200,000 copies.[7] Its publishing company was established as an independent corporation on 11 February 1989.[1] In March 1990 it began publishing a Monday edition, and it increased its page count through the 1990s;[1] in January 1996 it launched an online edition, Korea Link.[10] On 21 January 1998 it switched to horizontal typesetting and adopted the masthead title Seoul Economic Daily; it recorded its 10,000th issue in June 1999 and later that year launched a Japanese-language edition and a Korean edition of Golf Magazine in partnership with the Los Angeles Times, followed in 2000 by a Korean edition of Popular Science.[1][10] On 1 October 2000 the company separated from the Hankook Ilbo to operate independently.[1]
Diversification and digital transformation (2007–present)
On 27 January 2007 the newspaper moved its offices from Junghak-dong in Jongno-gu to Chungmuro in Jung-gu, and on 9 May 2007 it registered as a general-interest daily. On 26 December 2007 it acquired a cable television channel, Muhyup TV, from the KOSDAQ-listed company CL LCD.[1][7] On 10 October 2008 it launched Seoul Economic Network TV (SEN), a channel specialising in securities and personal-finance programming; the channel began after the newspaper signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Bloomberg Television in June 2008.[1][11] From the mid-2010s the paper expanded its digital and English-language operations.[5]
Organisation and ownership
Seoul Economic Daily is published by Seoul Economic Daily Co., Ltd. (newspaper licence no. Seoul Ga-00224, issued 13 May 1988), headquartered in the Twin Tree Tower on Yulgok-ro in Jongno-gu, Seoul.[5] The company is chaired by Chang Jae-min, a son of founder Chang Key-young.[12] Son Dong-young has served as president and chief executive since 2022 and also serves as the paper's publisher; he was reappointed in November 2025.[2][13]
Seoul Economic Daily was historically part of the Hankook Ilbo Media Group. In 2013 the group's chairman Chang Jae-ku, a brother of the current chairman, was indicted on charges of embezzlement and breach of trust that prosecutors said caused losses to the Hankook Ilbo and the Seoul Economic Daily.[14][15] He was convicted and sentenced to three years' imprisonment at first instance in February 2014; on appeal in 2015 the sentence was reduced to two years and six months.[16] The chairmanship of the Seoul Economic Daily subsequently passed to Chang Jae-min.[12]
Following the Hankook Ilbo's move into court receivership in August 2013, Seoul Economic Daily switched its home-delivery network from the Hankook Ilbo to the Dong-A Ilbo on 2 December 2013, ending the shared distribution arrangement the two papers had used since 1960.[7]
Content
A fixed front-page column, Tangbaekjeon, ran from the paper's launch but was dropped after ten months; it returned eight years later as Seogyeongcho. Editorials ceased shortly after the launch and resumed on page two on 21 January 1969, when the paper expanded from 24 to 36 pages a week. The front-page economic commentary was well received by general readers as well as by the business community.[1]
The 1969 expansion introduced, revived or strengthened sections covering short commentary, an enlarged economics class, management, distribution, regional news, home and living, science and technology, business affairs, prices and share prices, consumer guidance, hobbies and entertainment, and town planning, giving the paper a range that ran from the economy at large to household shopping. A redesign from 3 December 1975 reorganised the whole paper around securities, property and corporate information, adding a full page for business and commerce and widening the property-information section.[1]
The paper serialised an "economics class" feature that it collected into seven volumes, and published two volumes of management sayings summarising the methods of international business figures and management scholars. It also invited domestic and foreign figures to economics lectures and ran a competition for economics papers.[1] Page counts rose after the paper's reinstatement, reaching 20 pages four times a week in 1991 and 52 pages five times a week by January 1995; from 1999 the paper printed 40 pages on weekdays. Following the switch to horizontal typesetting in 1998 it substantially expanded its employment and personal-finance pages.[1]
Online operations
Seoul Economic Daily publishes online at sedaily.com; its first internet edition, Korea Link, launched in January 1996.[10] In 2018 the company launched Decenter, an outlet covering blockchain and cryptocurrency, and Signal, a premium capital-markets news service. Its English-language edition at en.sedaily.com covers KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets, corporate news and macroeconomics for an international audience.[5]
AI projects
In the mid-2020s, Seoul Economic Daily developed a suite of artificial intelligence-based newsroom technologies centred on AI LINK, an integrated media platform supporting editorial production, multilingual publishing, automated video generation, personalised news delivery, and AI-assisted newsroom workflows. Its ecosystem includes services such as AI PRISM, a personalised news platform, alongside AI NOVA, AI WAVE and AI GLOBE.[17]
Aju Press described AI LINK as an AI-powered newsroom cycle integrating news production, personalisation, video generation and global distribution. In 2026, AI LINK received the Grand Prize in the Digital Service and Business category at the Korea Online Newspaper Association's Digital Journalism Innovation Awards.[17]
AI LINK later won the Best AI-Driven News Product, Format or Strategy category at the 2026 WAN-IFRA Digital Media Awards Worldwide, while AI PRISM was shortlisted in the Best Newsletter category. The awards were presented during the 77th World News Media Congress held in Marseille, France.[18][19][20]
Circulation
According to the Korea ABC Association, the paper's certified paid circulation was 62,492 copies in 2020, a slight increase on the previous year.[3] Among the country's audited economic dailies that year, the sector's combined certified paid circulation was about 1.26 million copies.[21]
Editorial stance
As a business newspaper, Seoul Economic Daily concentrates on markets, industry and corporate affairs, and its editorials generally take pro-market, deregulatory positions. In July 2026, for example, it editorially opposed a newly enacted law tightening penalties for online disinformation, characterising the measure as an excessive restriction of online speech.[22]
Events and award programmes
Seoul Economic Daily's principal annual event is the Seoul Forum, a business and technology conference first held in 2010 and staged in Seoul.[23][24] Past editions have featured international keynote speakers, including the geographer Jared Diamond in 2016.[25]
The newspaper co-founded the Korea Architectural Culture Awards in 1992, establishing the programme jointly with the Ministry of Construction, a predecessor of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. In 1994 the awards merged with the Korean Architecture Exhibition, which the Korean Institute of Registered Architects had run since 1971, and from 1996 they have conferred state honours such as the Presidential and Prime Minister's prizes, making them among the most prominent architecture awards in South Korea. The programme is now organised by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, with Seoul Economic Daily among its sponsors.[26][27]
The paper has also established a number of other industry awards, including the Seoul Economic Daily Advertising Awards (2000), the Korea Emerging Technology Awards and Young Frontier Awards (2002), the e-Commerce Awards (2003), and an award for insurance professionals.[1]
Notable reporting and recognition
According to the newspaper's own account, in November 1997 it obtained an exclusive photograph at the Seoul Hilton of an economic official entering the room of the International Monetary Fund negotiating team, at the point when South Korea was seeking an IMF bailout.[28] In 2026, the paper's reporters Cho Yun-jin and Ju Jae-hyun won the economic-reporting category of the 57th Korea Journalists' Award, presented by the Journalists Association of Korea, for a series on the restrictions affecting South Korea's nuclear-power exports.[29] Its journalists have also received the association's monthly Reporter of the Month award, including its 271st edition in 2013 for exclusive reporting on financial-sector corporate governance.[30]
