Saint-Mathieu-de-Beloeil (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ matjø də bɛlœj]) is a municipality in southwestern Quebec, Canada, east of Montreal in the Regional County Municipality of La Vallée-du-Richelieu. The population as of the 2021 Canadian Census was 2,952.
Saint-Mathieu-de-Belœil has its origins in a parish established in 1772. The parish was canonically erected in 1832 and civilly established in 1835. Its territory originally included the present city of Belœil, although portions were later separated to form neighboring municipalities. The municipality changed from a parish municipality to its current municipal status in December 1992. Its name commemorates the priest Matthieu Camin LaTaille and refers to the former Seigneurie de Belœil, granted in 1694.[5]
