Limited atonement is a doctrine in Reformed theology which holds that the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ was definite in its design, intent, and efficacy, having been purposed to actually and certainly secure the eternal salvation of the elect alone. The doctrine asserts that Christ did not merely render salvation hypothetically possible for all humanity, but fully satisfied divine justice and procured all saving benefits—including regeneration, faith, and final preservation for those given to Him by the Father.
