Helwan is a suburban district in the southern part of Cairo, Egypt, directly opposite the ruins of Memphis. The area of Helwan witnessed prehistoric, ancient Egyptian, Roman and Muslim era activity, and is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities, with inhabitation beginning in the mid 6th millennium BCE.
