Flash point

The flash point of a material is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapor so that it will ignite in the presence of an ignition source. This is different from the fire point, which is the lowest temperature at which the vapors keep burning after the ignition source is removed. The fire point is higher than the flash point, because at the flash point the rate at which the vapor is produced is not sufficient to sustain combustion. The flash point is also sometimes confused with the autoignition temperature, the temperature that causes spontaneous ignition.
