The Whig Party was a major political party in the United States during the 1830s, 1840s and early 1850s. Alongside the Democratic Party, it formed the Second Party System. The party coalesced in opposition to President Andrew Jackson beginning in 1833 and had ceased to function as an effective national organization by 1856.
