Benjamin Jefferson Davis Jr. was an American communist lawyer and politician who served on the New York City Council from 1944 until his expulsion in 1949. That year, he was among a number of communist leaders prosecuted for violating the Smith Act. He was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison.
