Apamea is an ancient Hellenistic and Roman city situated on the right bank of the Orontes River, in the northwest of modern Syria. Founded under the name Pella as a Macedonian military settlement following the Wars of the Diadochi, it was established as a fortified city around 300 BC by Seleucus I Nicator, who renamed it after his wife, Apama. The city served as the capital of Apamene under the Seleucids and later became capital of the Roman province of Syria Secunda, a status it retained into the Crusader period.
