Worldbuilding is the process carried out in speculative fiction of constructing an imaginary world or setting, pursued in high fantasy and sometimes recurring as a fictional universe. Developing the world with coherent qualities such as a history, geography, culture and ecology is a key task for many science fiction or fantasy writers. Worldbuilding often involves the creation of novel geography, flora, fauna, inhabitants, technology, and societies, including their customs as well as their languages ; any of these contrivances may carry a backstory.
