@Johnbod: - Louisa Aldrich-Blake was a Dame and I'm writing about her memorial in London, so it should be "Dame Louisa Aldrich-Blake Memorial"? I wasn't sure because ones like the Victoria Memorial, London don't include "Queen" before it. I just noticed Sir William Glasgow Memorial so it looks like there's a precedent. I've seen it described different ways, but it's listed as "Memorial to Dame Louisa Aldrich Blake in Tavistock Square Gardens" by Historic England. APK hi :-) (talk) 03:55, 6 July 2026 (UTC)

L'Estaque

Hi. The article on L'Estaque is currently very short, contains no sources, and provides very little information. Could someone please expand and improve it, perhaps using the corresponding French article at fr:L'Estaque as a starting point? I'm also posting this here because L'Estaque has a significant artistic heritage, having been closely associated with several major painters. Why is "Hierarchy of genres" a low status article Visual Arts?

The hierarchy of genres greatly influenced Western art during the 18th and 19th centuries. Shouldn't it be rated of a HIGH rather than LOW importance within the Visual Arts project?

It is also in dire need of improvement on many levels. I have put in into my to-do bucket but not with a high priority as I am currently working on improving articles on paintings by J. M. W. Turner, who successfully challenged it during the first half of the 19th century with very smart tactics (see Snow Storm: Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps if you are curious as to how he did it).JP 21:36, 8 July 2026 (UTC)

The location of artworks with multiple versions

I have come across a few cases of artwork series using Template:Infobox Artwork, which specifies a location with a city and a museum parameter. However, it is common for a series of artworks to end up in different places, like Sunflowers (Van Gogh series), Haystacks (Monet series), and Poplars (Monet series). It seems like we are currently just picking the location of one piece for the infobox arbitrarily, and now there's a minor edit war on Magdalene with the Smoking Flame. Is there a convention or guideline to this? LkL-70547 (talk) 20:08, 14 August 2026 (UTC)

If the infobox is causing a really serious problem it should just be dropped. I don't think MOS:ART deals with this exact point, although it encourages treating multiple castings etc, series or group of variants together in a single article. I hope I have sorted out the Magdalene carwreck, but if not, let's cut the box. Johnbod (talk) 23:42, 14 August 2026 (UTC)

This is what I advise: If the article is primarily about a single artwork, and the other versions are preparatory sketches or are otherwise less notable, then use the location for the main version. If the article is about a series where all works are notable as a whole or where all (or most) of the works are as notable as each other, then put the location in the description of the image instead of the infobox and consider not using an infobox.

For example:

• Water Lilies (Monet series) is about the series as a whole, the article doesn't have an infobox, and each painting has its own location listed underneath of it and in the table that lists all of the paintings.
• A Modern Olympia is about a specific painting, which has its location listed in the infobox with the image. The other less notable sketches have their locations listed under the images individually.
