Controversial Issue and Consensus

Hello Andrewa,

I'm a relatively new editor and would like your advice. I felt you might be a good fit to help given the inclusion of the picture on the top of your page.

I am trying to edit a page that has very controversial connotations, and have felt I've been met with the "contradiction" response, refutation with little/no evidence provided. I'm well read on the subject, but may be making community mistakes as per the rules (at least so I keep being told). I understand the conclusion is not tolerated in society, especially politically, but it is documented in many sources; thus, there is a discrepancy between the laypeople and experts in the field. It is instinctively rejected without analysis of the literature, which caused problems when the discussion went to fringe theories. I want to make sure I follow the correct plan of action, but am continuously having my edits reverted without any response in the talk page. Even my edit that simply reverts the changes by a user who was banned a day after their comments keeps getting reverted. These reverts are primarily by one user, but also by other random users who have never edited the page before, which I find odd. Would you please help me find the right path forward, or at least how to navigate what is acceptable and unacceptable?

@Andrewa Good evening administrator, I noticed that the profile "D.S. Lioness" is identical to the profile "ΔώραΣτρουμπούκη" as the interests are similar, as are the initials of the name, the (first) name and also the ideology (Marxist) are identical between the two profiles. It should be noted that the "ΔώραΣτρουμπούκη" profile on the Greek Wikipedia has already been blocked indefinitely.

It looks good to me.

But I am confused as to exactly the relationship between the BSR, the BSMR, and the existing Indian CANDUs. Is this accurate? Which of these are BSRs and BSMRs if so? Andrewa (talk) 21:39, 18 August 2024 (UTC)

@Andrewa I am also confused about the classification. I tried to develop the article based on the information available from reliable sources. From the media coverage, it seems that the BSR is proposed as a miniaturized derivative of the IPHWR-220, and the BSMR is a proposed modular reactor based Light Water Reactorn design that will replace the current CANDU derivatives, which happens to be PHWRs, by simply replacing the pressure vessel. That seems audacious. The problem with my understanding is that one cannot easily convert an existing PHWR to an LWR due to the involvement of heavy water. In short, it's not feasible. So, why issue such a confusing statement in the press? Secondly, why didn’t a reliable source like The Hindu fact-check the statement? Charlie (talk) 03:45, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

Thanks, and the RM at the talk page of Eurasian Plate was relisted on the 15th, so not much time left. Logic and commonsense would keep the uppercasing on the 90+ plates under discussion, but lowercasers are using the casing guideline, which some of us have countered with WP:IAR and WP:COMMONSENSE which is under fairly intense discussion. The discussion was on whether the subject of the article is the primary topic for the name "Shiv Sena" however none of the participants have provided any evidence as to the effect. Thanks for discussing this here, Arnav Bhate. That's the process we need to follow, and we can't usefully sidestep it.

But the PT discussion to which you refer was not the basis for the close. You are providing additional arguments. Whether or not they are relevant to the name, they are not now relevant to the close.

The history of the articles involved is already complicated enough without making it more so as you propose here.

I certainly agree that the results to date are not good.

I suggest yet another discussion, but this time as an informal discussion listing all of the topics (including both Shiv Sena (disambiguation) and a possible set index article) that might go by the title of Shiv Sena, and trying to reach a consensus as to (1) what articles we should have (that needs to be agreed first) and (2) the title each should have.

I have opened a proposal to merge Shiv Sena (2022–present) into Shiv Sena, if that succeeds then there is no argument about the primary topic, which would be the resulting article from the merge. This was something of a chicken and egg situation.

The file seems to have been moved to Commons. I am struggling to understand why this would ever be an appropriate action for a fair-use file, but that is what happened. If anyone has any links to any relevant discussion either in en:Wikipedia or Commons, I am very interested, so as to understand what happened and perhaps avoid a repetition.

True that nobody objected. In fact nobody commented either way. In some circumstances I do interpret lack of comment as approval, notably if there's an RM that appeals validly to policy but there has been no other participation... rather than cast a support !vote, I am comfortable often comfortable to close it as move. But this didn't seem to fit that pattern to me.

Rather than take it to MR, would you like me to reopen the RM to allow that to be considered? Happy to do that on the principle of minimum waste of time. It seems the best way forward. Andrewa (talk) 07:10, 15 February 2025 (UTC)

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

• When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
• All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
• A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
• As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
  • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
  • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Temporary account IP viewer user right

• Administrators may grant the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right to non-administrators who meet the criteria for granting. Importantly, an editor must make an explicit request for the permission (e.g. at WP:PERM/TAIV)—administrators are not permitted to assign the right without a request.
• Administrators will automatically be able to see temporary account IP information once they have accepted the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy via Special:Preferences or via the onboarding dialog which comes up after temporary accounts are deployed.

Impact for administrators

• It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
• It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
• Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

• Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
• Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)

Useful tools for patrollers

• It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options → Enable the user info card
  • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
• Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
• Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
• The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

I'm a newbie editor, and noticed that you chimed in on my requested renaming of James Jesus Angleton. Obviously, I feel pretty strongly about where I want the renaming to go, but it's definitely without consensus. Should I just close the renaming request because of the lack of consensus per wp:rmci, or do something else? Forgive me for my confusion, just don't want to do anything wrong. Closure should normally be done by an uninvolved editor. The only time it's proper for the requestor (called the "nominator" of "nom" for short) to close a requested move themselves is if they decide to withdraw the request and obviously that's not the case here. You can request closure but you do not need to do so, it will happen in any case. Watch Wikipedia:Requested moves/Current discussions#Elapsed listings and the following backlog section and you will see the requests progressively closed as editors who take on this role get around to processing the requests.

Much of this is automated by various scripts and bots which take care of some of the drudgery, but that's the underlying process. Andrewa (talk) 21:48, 18 November 2025 (UTC)

You noted here that the move history will be lost. May I introduce you to User:Nardog/MoveHistory? You'll find there are many, many more moves than the short list you linked. Thanks for the heads-up. It's an interesting looking tool. I will have a look at installing and enabling it, but my initial impression is that it's a lot of trouble and learning for no obvious benefit to me. Obviously it works well for others. But it's not a high priority for me.

There are lots of other tools used by other WP:RM regulars that I'd like to investigate too! But I don't claim to be an expert on every aspect of RM, and am very selective in the discussions I join. Some of these tools (and perhaps this one) will I'm sure turn out to be more useful to others who tend to work on different types of RM discussions than I do. And that's good. We are a team, each with our own specialities.

The short list to which I linked are just those that would otherwise be in the page history, and no others, is that correct? Those are the ones that I was concerned to preserve, for many reasons, including but not only detecting and controlling vandalism, and dealing with unintentional disruption by new users.

I find these page histories useful for these and other purposes. If you don't, and would prefer to use this much longer list, that's fine.

Your short list is just the page history of Islamic mathematics. I wouldn't worry about it getting deleted. There is no non-redirect history, so if the RM closes as "moved" then most likely the pages will be swapped, leaving this history at the old title. (If an admin performs the move, they may choose to G6 the history instead, in which case only admins will be able to see this history, but any curious editor could request a copy at WP:REFUND.) A more useful list for page moves would be

I understand if you're wary of installing a script you won't use – I regularly clean out unnecessary scripts myself. There aren't too many others used for moving pages: I list two others at User:Toadspike/How to RMTR, and some folks use a third (Move+ or alternatives) for closing RMs, though I prefer to do that manually.
