Typhoon Gaemi, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Carina, was a powerful, deadly, and destructive tropical cyclone that caused devastating flooding in the Philippines in July 2024, primarily due to the moisture from the storm being drawn into the southwest monsoon, triggering widespread torrential rains in the country despite not making landfall. The storm later impacted East China and Taiwan as a typhoon. Gaemi was the third named storm and second typhoon of the annual typhoon season, forming as a tropical disturbance east of Palau on July 17. Environmental conditions were generally favorable for tropical cyclogenesis, prompting the JMA and JTWC to classify it as a tropical depression two days later, with the latter agency designating it as 05W. The storm later strengthened into a tropical storm on July 20.
