On June 2, 2017, at 12:03 a.m. PhST (GMT+8), a gunman attacked Resorts World Manila and started fires, causing a stampede which killed 38 people and injured 70 others. Initially thought to be a terrorist attack related to the Marawi crisis in Mindanao, the attack was an armed robbery by 42-year-old Jessie Javier Carlos, a Filipino former civil servant. Carlos stole casino chips worth ₱113 million. Following confrontation with the responding SWAT team around 1:30 a.m., Carlos broke into a room on the fifth floor of the adjacent Maxims Hotel, committing suicide fifteen minutes later.
