The Reggiane Re.2003 was a development from the Reggiane Re.2002 fighter bomber that first flew on 29 June 1941. It was designed to replace the outdated IMAM Ro.37 used at the time. Unlike the Re.2002, it had room for a second crewman who sat behind the pilot. It was equipped with onboard camera equipment. The Fiat A.74 RC.38 engine was intended to be used originally, but the Piaggio P. XI RC 40 bis was chosen instead. Only one was ever produced, and production for a second started, but never finished. The Regia Aeronautica (Italian Air Force) made an order of 200, but cancelled the order as Allied bombing raids made the Air Force's focus switch to fighter aircraft.
Development and design
In 1941, after experience of the opening months of the Western Desert campaign of the Second World War showed that the IMAM Ro.37 biplane used by Italy as an observation aircraft, was unfit for front line use, the Regia Aeronautica required a replacement with superior performance, and chose a two seat derivative of the Reggiane Re.2000 to meet this requirement.[1][2] The resulting aircraft, the Re.2003, was a low-wing cantilever monoplane of all-metal construction with a retractable tailwheel undercarriage. It was powered by a single Piaggio P.XI R.C.40 bis radial engine rated at 1,000 hp (750 kW) which drove a three-bladed propeller. Pilot and observer sat in tandem in an enclosed cockpit.[3]
