On 2 April 2011, Ronan Kerr, a 25‑year‑old Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) constable, was killed by a booby‑trap car bomb outside his home in Killyclogher, near Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. A dissident republican group later claimed responsibility. Kerr, a Roman Catholic and member of the Beragh Red Knights Gaelic Athletic Association club, was among a growing number of Catholic recruits to the PSNI. His murder prompted widespread condemnation across Northern Ireland and internationally, leading to large public rallies and cross‑community expressions of support.
