Hans-Dieter Sues (13 de janeiro de 1956 – 21 de fevereiro de 2026) foi um paleontólogo americano nascido na Alemanha[1] que foi Geólogo de Pesquisa Sênior e Curador de Paleontologia de Vertebrados no National Museum of Natural History da Smithsonian Institution em Washington, D.C.[2]
Vida e carreira
Sues frequentou a Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, a University of Alberta e a Harvard University (Ph.D., 1984).[3] Trabalhou na McGill University e foi paleobiólogo pesquisador no Smithsonian antes de assumir um cargo no Royal Ontario Museum, onde foi vice-presidente de coleções e pesquisa.[4]
Em 1998, Sues foi eleito Fellow da American Association for the Advancement of Science.[5] Em 2002, mudou-se para o Carnegie Museum of Natural History, tornando-se seu curador de paleontologia de vertebrados.[4] De 2002 a 2004, foi também presidente da Society of Vertebrate Paleontology.[6] Em 2003, Sues foi eleito Fellow da Royal Society of Canada.[7][8] Em 2010, foi agraciado com o Alexander von Humboldt Prize por Excelência em Pesquisa e Ensino.[9]
Sues publicou sobre uma ampla gama de tetrápodes extintos do Mesozóico e Paleozóico, incluindo temnospôndilos,[10][11] répteis primitivos,[12][13] sinapsídeos,[14][15] tartarugas,[16][17] dinossauros,[18][19][20][21][22] outros arcossauromorfos,[23][24][25][26][27] e lepidossauromorfos.[28][29] Ele também contribuiu para estudos sobre a evolução da herbivoria[30][31] e transições faunísticas.[32][33] Ele estudou principalmente táxons da América do Norte e Europa.[34][35][36][37] O paquicefálossauro Hanssuesia recebeu esse nome em sua homenagem.[38]
Sues faleceu em 21 de fevereiro de 2026, aos 70 anos.[39]
