The San Francisco Bay Area is the cultural and economic center of Northern California. The region surrounds and includes San Francisco Bay, and is anchored by the cities of Oakland, San Francisco, and San Jose. It is commonly known as the Bay Area or simply the Bay. With a population of over nine million people, the Bay Area is the second-largest combined statistical area in California and the fifth-largest in the United States.
